The Loma Club Course Review

Intorduction

The Loma Club is just around the corner from the San Diego Airport. When coming or going, and you have a few hours to spare, check out the Loma Club. They are a 9 hole, par 3 course. It’s a perfect way to work on our short game before we headed further North to Carlsbad.

Perch on a hill in Old San Deigo, The Loma Club offers rare elevation changes for a par 3 course. Playing only at 1113 yards, there is only one down hill hole that is remotely long at 204. 4 of the 9 holes play under 100 yards so it’s great for wedge work as well.

Conditions of The Loma Club

As we looked around we weren’t overly impressed, but once we got onto the greens, that changed. The tee boxes as you would expect can be a bit worn down, and that was fine. The greens were just awesome. The areas around the green were good as well. If you are to miss the green, you typically had a good lie unless you were fairly errant. Along with the greens, the bunkers were also well kept.

The 9 holes at The Loma Club

Hole 1 is just 90 yards. This is one of the few flat holes on the course. No real hazards here, just don’t be long.

Hole 2 plays a bit uphill and 110 yards. This hole plays a bit tougher than most. With two sand bunkers on the left and trees right, you will want to hit this green. Just short right would be the best miss.

Hole 3 is the shortest hole at just 70 yards. Just avoid going left into what appears to be a water storage tank, maybe. Short is the best miss here.

Hole 4 is the first longer hole at 147 yards. The green here is elongated and not very hard to hit. Avoid pulling it left down the hill. Short is good here as well.

Hole 5 is the picturesque hole that you will see photos posted from The Loma club. It plays only 77 yards but well downhill considering it’s length. Do not be long. The bunker in the back is fairly penal. Anything short will roll up towards the front of the green.

Tip: Leave your bag at the table that sits between the tee boxes of hole 5 and 7. You will probably need the same club you hit on 5 on hole 6, more than likely a couple of wedges at most.

Hole 6 plays 75 back up hill just a bit. With a tree left, and bunker in front and behind, right is your only option to miss here.

Hole 7 starts the longer holes, and is the longest on the course at 204. It plays every so slightly down hill. Hit it straight here, and coming up short if anything. Anything wayward right or left will be tough to get up and down.

Hole 8 plays back towards the tee box of hole 7, and is 183 yards. This is a tough green to hit, protected by large trees. Miss deep right over the bunker if anything. Also, short would be fine as well if you miss the bunkers.

Hole 9 plays 157 yards, just ever so slightly down hill. There are 4 bunkers at each corner of the green. There is a decent amount of room in front of the green, which is where you would want to miss.

Conclusion

The Loma Club was excellent and we will definitely play there again if time allows when we fly in and out of San Diego. Treat yourself next time you are in the area. It’s just a quick 10 minute drive from the airport.
