Earn 1,500 Bonus American Airlines AAdvantage Miles Shopping Online

School may not be starting for a while, but American Airlines AAdvantage is offering an above average bonus for shopping online through their portal as back to school event (don’t worry, you don’t have to actually buy school supplies to get the bonus).  Back in May we saw a bonus for only 400 miles. This time around you can up to 1,500 miles.

The Details

There are two bonus levels for this back to school offer. Spend just $150 through the American Airlines AAdvantage shopping portal and you will receive 500 bonus miles, or spend $350 and receive 1,500 bonus miles. This is on top of the miles you would earn normally for using the portal, so it’s very likely you can earn 2,000 or more miles during this promotion.

You can only receive one bonus, and it’s based on your cumulative spending. This means you don’t have to purchase it all at one time. This promotion runs through July 26th, so you will need to shop before then. Remember to make sure you make qualifying purchases. Gift cards or other cash equivalents don’t count. Any returns will also affect your cumulative spending amount. Shipping and taxes unfortunately don’t count either so make sure you are adding up your subtotal. There are also certain products and offers that don’t qualify, so make sure you read the entire bonus terms. It may take up to 10 weeks for the bonus miles to post to your account.

My Thoughts

Any time I see that a shopping portal has a bonus, especially American Airlines, I jump to meet the bonus. If you spend $350 and receive the 1,500 mile bonus, it’s basically like getting an additional 4 miles per dollar on your purchase. Some top retailers like Wal-Mart or  Best Buy rarely get bonus miles, and this is the best time to take advantage to shop at those stores.

With Prime Day lurking later today and tomorrow, many stores will be having their own sales and this is an excellent time to earn the shopping bonus. In fact, more than 20% of the deals from Amazon’s Prime Day last year were actually cheaper at other retailers, so make sure you shop around.

If you’re planning a trip, take advantage of the numerous hotels on American Airlines shopping portal, such as IHG, Wyndham, Embassy Suites and Waldorf Astoria. A one weekend stay could get you the top bonus.

If you have an American Express Platinum card and haven’t used your Saks Fifth Avenue $50 credit for July-December, this is a great time to use it. Saks is currently 15 miles per dollar, and if you get the top bonus, it will be like earning 19 miles per dollar!

Conclusion

Like I mentioned above, take advantage of this American Airlines AAdvantage shopping portal bonus. This is an above average bonus as the last couple of bonuses were only 400 and 500 miles each. If you start taking advantage of every shopping bonus for airlines, in a couple years you will be able to take a trip once a year for free on miles.
