Save money on groceries and other purchases with Ibotta

I was introduced to the app Ibotta last spring. I usually wait to see how an app is for a while before I will share it with everyone else. Ibotta has saved me $172 in about 6 months. This isn’t going to make or break me, but it will pay for a rental car, or hotel on one of my upcoming trips.

How it Works

Ibotta is really easy to use and has a variety of items to choose from. After downloading the app, you simply select which products or offers you like or are interested in purchasing. As you shop, you can scan the bar codes of items to make sure they match that particular offer. They even have .10-.25 any item offers.

Once you have found the offers it’s time to go shop. There are numerous stores that you can use including Wal-Mart, Target, Food Lion, Kroger, HEB, CVS, Walgreens, Fred’s, and many more.

After you have checked out and made your purchases, make sure you keep your receipt. You will use the Ibotta app to either upload or take a picture, or scan the QR code. The app will match your offers and give you a chance to select any missing offers. Sometimes you may have to scan the product bar code (if you scan it in the store, often times you won’t have to scan it again). You can even link a loyalty card and not have to scan your receipt.

You will receive your cash within in 48 hours, often times much quicker.

Some offers may take more, such as those made with hertz or booking.com. If fact, one of my cash back offers from hertz took the entire 8 weeks to receive.

Bonuses

Under the account tab on the bottom of the Ibotta app, you will find a section that tells you all of the bonuses available. There will be some to purchase items online or redeem a certain number of offers to receive the bonus.

Getting your money

When you have accumulated $20 or more, you can take out your money you have saved. You can have them deposit it into either a venmo or paypal account, or receive a gift card. The few times I have taken money out, it has been a smooth transaction.

Overall, Ibotta is a great app to save money on items you are already purchasing. I don’t use it over the shopping portals (find out more about those here) as I like earning airline miles more, but Ibotta is great for in store purchases or rental cars that I wouldn’t be able to use those portals.
