Wachesaw Plantation Club Course Review

Introduction

Wachesaw Plantation Club is a private golf course in the southern Myrtle Beach area. Designed by Tom Fazio, it is remarkably challenging but enjoyable in the same notion. There are relatively flat area, and then areas that have drastic hills and elevation.

Playing just at 6853 yards, it’s not the longest course. But it does play to a 73.2 course rating with a slope of 132. Good shots will be rewarded while bad shots will more than likely leave you in a heap of trouble.

Course Conditions at Wachesaw Plantation Club

If you have read any of our other Myrtle Beach course reviews, you know we were there shortly after a long period of rain. I was pleasantly surprised that they were at 90 degree rule. It had rained the night before so I expected to be on the cart path. While Wachesaw Plantation Club doesn’t overseed, their fairways were in great shape for being dormant. This also meant that the rough wasn’t as thick and never really penalized us as much than if it hadn’t been dormant. The green were the fastest we had played all week and were firm. It took us a bit to adjust to them but they were in fantastic shape.

Pro Shop at Wachesaw Plantation Club

The pro shop at Wachesaw Plantation Club was definitely on the smaller side, but they still had anything you would need for the round. Being a private club, you can tell it was geared more towards members needs versus that of a public course like the nearby TPC Myrtle Beach.

The Range and Practice Area

We had a bit of time and decided to warm up again a bit as this was our second round of the day. The range was two sided and was plentiful. there is a small bunker with a chipping green as well. It’s sufficient but nothing spectacular. There is also a large putting green that you can use.

The Front 9 at Wachesaw Plantation Club

Hole 1 is a straight forward par 4 that is just under 400 yards. There is a large bunker that runs down the right hand side at the beginning of the hole, but shouldn’t be in play. This will be for any hole, stay out of the trees. Avoid the bunker on the left and anything long will bounce and flirt with the water that is behind the green.

Hole 2 is a nifty par 4. Avoid the finger style bunker on the left off the tee. There isn’t anything really protecting the green here, so take dead aim.
Short is the best miss.

Hole 3 is a mid distance par 3. Just clear the Tam Fazio trademark two front bunker and you will be fine.

Hole 4 is an easy reachable par 5. Just avoid the large bunker on the right. The hole bends slightly to the left so the right side of the fairway will give you a better look into the green. Short of the green is the best miss. There are two decent sized bunker on the front. Do not be long here as there is a penalty area behind the green. You will likely bonce toward it or even hit the cart path and find yourself taking a drop if you are long.

Hole 5 is tough par 4 that bends right. Unless driver is a strong point, it’s wise here to take a fairway wood off the tee, which takes the large bunker on the right out of play. Large hills on the left can make it difficult to get a good stance. Avoid the sole bunker that is short right of the green and you’ll be fine. You really can take dead aim at this green. Short and left would be the best misses.

Hole 6 is a longer but straight par 4. Longer hitters may bring the water on the far right into play. Avoid the fairway bunker on the left. There is only one bunker by the green, which is located deep right. Take aim into this green. Short is best in my opinion here.

Hole 7 is par three that has water running down the left side all the way to the green. Luckily enough, there is plenty of room on the right. There are hills and a lone bunker right but it beats hitting it into the water.

Hole 8 is a par 5. You might be able to get there in 2, but the risk is too much for me. Avoid the bunkers off the tee, even if you need to hit a fairway wood or hybrid. Lay up short of the water to the number you want into the green. It is important to hit the green here. There are several pod bunkers behind that lie on a large hill. It will be tough to get up and down from here, and you will be hitting back towards the water that lies in front of the green.

Hole 9 is a short, straight par 4. Avoid the bunkers on the left. Take a fairway wood if you need to. There is a large bunker on the front left and a grass bunker behind the green. Short right or long left are your two best miss options.

The Back 9 at Wachesaw Plantation Club

Hole 10 is a straight par 4. You will walk through a row of bushes to the tee box. Not sure why, but I though this was pretty cool. There is just one small lone bunker on the right but it shouldn’t come into play. There is a large bunker on the left side of the green. Just avoid that bunker and miss small. Any big misses will be tough to get up and down.

Hole 11 is a par for very similar to hole 5, but much shorter. You will only need a hybrid or long iron off the tee more than likely. Avoid the large bunker on the left with your approach. The best misses are short or just right.

Hole 12 is a mid range par 5, play just over 550 yards. It plays ever so slightly down hill and plays a bit shorter than it looks. There is a large sand waste area in front of the tee but it shouldn’t be in play. Keep it in the fairway and off the hill to the right if you want to make a go at the green. There is one pod bunker in the front right you want to avoid but other than that it’s unprotected. Anything short will be better than long, especially when going for it in 2. There’s not much in the way or to worry about if you are laying up, so hit it to the distance you want left to the green.

Hole 13 is a nifty little par 3. There is a large tree just short right of the green. If you move the ball right to left, it will probably come into play. Avoid the two bunkers short right and short left of the green. Just deep right is the only really decent miss. You will need to hit this green.

Hole 14 is a shorter par 4 at 332 yards. It plays downhill and longer players will be able to reach the front. There is no room behind the green, so going long isn’t an option here. I preferred to hit a hybrid or long iron off the tee to get a full wedge here to keep myself from sending one over the back. While there are no bunkers, there is a large hill on the left side of the green that can cause all sorts of problems, so keep away from it.

Hole 15 is a par 4 that bends slightly to the left. This is one of the best tee shots on the course. You literally will tee of between two very large and old oak trees with moss hanging down. The fairway slants right to left, so make sure you aren’t too far left off the tee. It only plays 389, so driver isn’t necessary. Do not be afraid of the hill to the right of the green. It is not as penal as it looks, and where any miss should be. Do avoid the bunker that is short left of the green.

Hole 16 is a par 4 that looks tougher than it is. Take your tee shot down the right side of the fairway for the best look at the green. There isn’t anything protecting this green so take dead aim!

Hole 17 is a devilish par 3. Playing at 201 yards I thought it played tougher than the 16 handicap ranking. You cannot be short into this green. The hill behind the green will act as a natural backstop, and where any miss should be.

Hole 18 is a nice finishing par 5. There is a forced carry over some water but shouldn’t come into play. Avoid the deep bunkers on the left hand side of the fairway off the tee. You can go for it in 2, but there’s more risk in it than I wanted. There isn’t too much into the lay up shot except for the large hill on the right. There is only one bunker well short of the green on the right. Much like 14, you cannot go long into this green. You also cannot go left, leaving your misses only short and right.

Conclusion

I truly enjoyed Wachesaw Plantation Club. It hard some tough holes that challenged me. It also had some holes that where short, but you had to hit your spots to score on them, which I found fun. The conditions were outstanding and I hope one day I will be able to play there again. If you get the opportunity to play Wachesaw Plantation Club, don’t pass it up
